Your washing machine works hard week after week. With a little bit of regular maintenance, you can significantly extend its lifespan and prevent those dreaded mid cycle breakdowns. Here are our top tips for washing machine maintenance.
1. Don't Overload the Machine
It's tempting to stuff as many clothes as possible into a single load, but overloading puts immense strain on the motor, belts, and bearings. It also prevents your clothes from getting properly clean. Always follow the manufacturer's load capacity guidelines.
2. Clean the Lint Filter
Many front loading washers have a drain pump filter located near the bottom. Check your manual to locate it and clean it out every few months to prevent clogs and drainage issues.
Leave the door slightly ajar after every wash. This allows moisture to escape, preventing the growth of mold and mildew, which causes that awful "musty" smell in front loaders.
3. Inspect the Hoses
Check the hot and cold water hoses connecting your washer to the wall at least once a year. Look for cracks, blisters, or signs of wear. A burst hose can cause catastrophic water damage to your home.
4. Use the Right Detergent
If you have a high-efficiency (HE) machine, you MUST use HE detergent. Using regular detergent creates excessive suds that can confuse the machine's sensors and damage the electronics over time.
